Maybe this should be in interior styling, but it's our forum. Muwahaha. At least this post might lead to a project, so there.
Here is my interior. I don't know what pieces I should paint, or what color would coordinate well with the ugly 80's style blue dash. I hope to cover the dash or dye it grey one day. I have no idea what is involved in dying it. I want to get a 1.5 DIN Alpine cd player to get rid of the ugly jutting dash kit. That's my bass control knob under the cig lighter. There is a little shelf under the dash from the middle to passenger side. that is useless because everything slides off of it, so it might be utilized for something cool. And the gauges, ugggllllllyyy.

I think my first step would be to replace the gauges... Those are just too sparse for my taste. Picking pieces to paint is going to be tough since there really aren't big pieces that would look good painted and be fairly easy to remove too.... I can't think of anything off the top of my head for the little shelf thing down there unless you dig neons or some other kind of trick lighting.....

What would you think of billet window cranks, pedals, and shift stick/knob? Too old school? There's a carbon fiber dash kit (http://www.autodash.com/details.lasso?sn=2921&pn=wd132b) out there, but it's 264 bucks.
Oh, and the 1.5 DIN Alpine radio would not need a dash kit, and would set flush.

Welp first gens interiors are simple and square but definatly need help. I wouldnt go overboard though. I dunno what kinda budget you are on but i would guess you are like the other 99% of this forum and on a tight budget.
First I would work on those guages. I really dont think there is any help for those ugly ducklings so i would replace em. I would look into some aftermarket guages like autometer. With this you can do what ever you want and there are many different styles of them out there. You could make your own surround with sheet metal and polish it or paint it. It would take some work but definatly look awsome.
As for the dash I love tweed so i would tweed it. Its easy to do and fairly cheap. You can also use foam with it to make designs.
I dunno about dying it but my freind picked a whole new dash up at a junk yard in perfect condition for like $30 so he could go from blue to grey.
Like AirNavy said neons would prolly be about the only use i could think of for the shelf.
I am sure if i look at the pics some more i could come up with more ideas. :)

The billet stuff is okay, but just too easy... :D Stuff like that should come near the end when you have decided on an overall theme/design you want for the interior and have most of that vision complete. Otherwise, they may not fit in with the look you are trying to achieve and then you dropped a lot of loot on stuff you really don't like that much. None of the dash kits, for any vehicle, really grab me. They look stuck on, imagine that since they are... :D Have you tried to pull any of the dash out before? I'm asking because I think it would very sweet to reshape the instrument cluster thing (the big box sticking out of the dash) into something more round and flowing into the rest of the dash which could be 'glassed and painted for that classic car metal dash look. That along with redoing the gauges with some nice round Autometer gauges or a cluster from another vehicle (maybe a 2nd gen with the same engine and such so integrating it wouldn't be as hard?) would go a long way towards completely changing the look inside.... As usual my ideas involve a lot of work and destruction for reconstruction, but hey you asked... :D

What about Sunbird Turbo gauges. AKA SY/TY gauges.

I have no clue where to find all the pieces I would need, but it's been done before.
