Talking Blazer rear disc install completed!

Finally installed my blazer rear discs yesterday after looking at the parts laying around for a month or so.

Everything went pretty smooth, I used a 1/8" spacer I made out of aluminum to space the backing plate off the axle b/c everyone was talking about clearance issues. Every thing looked good to me, and is working great. No real change in pedal feel, but the truck will almost stand on its nose now! I didnt get to drive it much b/c I took it straight to the muffler shop to have new tailpipes ran. Much to my surprise my turndown had melted the e-brake cable and reduced the pass. side sway bar bushing to a melted mess!!

Anyone figured out an e-brake cable for this yet? The pass side is fine and fit like the drum one did, but the dr. side is about 1-1.5" to long and if you put the adjuster on it and attach it to the pass side cable then its about 2.5-3" too short, and there is alot of slack that will have to wind up somewhere. There is a extension cable in there before it hooks to the dr. side cable. I might hook the pass. & dr. side together see how much extra I need and try to find a cable shop that can make that one about 3" longer?

All my parts came off a 99 4 dr. in case anyone is wondering.

Did you change the entire rear or just the brakes? I'm looking at changing the rear in my '93 Jimmy to one from a 2001. My rear whines so it needs work. Going with the newer rear has the advantage of getting rear disc brakes, but if the ebrakes don't work that's a problem.

No I just chagned the parts on my rearend. I can probably easily get the e-brake to work, I was just trying to get done for the day and that was not one of my worries.

Are you gonna get your doner rear out of a junk yard? If so see if they will let you look at it before they take it out. Try to get one off the same body your have (2 or 4 dr.) and make note of how the cables are routed. Yours will probably work, then you have to make sure they take the cables loose, not cut them b/c they are pretty expensive. I'm going to look at my buddies 2 dr and see if the dr. side cable would work better. If not then I will try lengthing that extension cable which I'm sure will work. If anything get the whole cable from the pedal back, it will be a pain but that way you have everything in case you need it.

I used parts off a 4 dr. to do mine. The pass. side cable fit perfect, but the dr. side one is too long. I'm gonna look at my buddys 2 dr. blazer and see if it would work better. There is also a Zr2 at my local junkyard and I'm gonna try to look at tomorrow. I beleive the ZR2 cables are gonna be the answer to my problem though. I'm pretty sure a 2 dr. blazers will be too short for my extra cab, they maybe perfect for a reg cab truck though.

The donor rear is in Arizona, I'm in Alabama. Unfortunately I can't find a junk yard around here with the parts. It seems like most of the local yards don't want to stock anything, they just want to locate the parts through their network. I skipped the middle man and did the search myself. That's why the rear is so far away. I'll ask them to supply the calbe from the pedal back. It's coming from a 2001 4 door. mine is a 1992 4 door. I'm looking at doing the front spindle/brake swap and the entire rear swap. Hopefullt this will finally cure the mushy brake pedal and put some decent brakes on my truck.

Thanks,

BOBH

Did you find anything out with the ZR2 cables? I've been pondering doing this swap for a long time. If monies permit, I may kick down and do it.

No Hopefully I'm going to look at them tomorrow. If I come up empty there I can probably make the blazer cables work, but I will need a longer extension cable made up. (I listed why it isnt working in my blazer thread. )

Otherwise I had no other problems and I think it is a worthwhile mod!

Front brakes are next on my list, as soon as I find some hubs for a reasonable price.

No, I didnt measure mine but I think they are 11" on the rears. I have a set of front rotors too, they might be 12", I'm not sure on that though.
